High Credit Card Limits

I know this has been discussed before but for sure does anyone know what is the top limit the CRA's count? Would anyone intentionally drop a limit on a card so that it would count towards the reporting? I am thinking about it but it seems like it might not be a great idea.

Re: High Credit Card Limits

The CRAs report what the CC or creditor gives them!!!   They do not change the CL.

What we have here is a failure to communicate. LOL.

Re: High Credit Card Limits

Our friend Psychic has figured out that $30,000 is that threshold where a CC will not be figured into reporting. Another member, sorry the name escapes me at the moment, actually called one of the CRAs and they told him the same thing. It seems that to be safe, you should have the card at $29,000.

Would I drop my limits to make it count in util? You bet your bottom dollar, I would. Let's say I had a $40,000 limit on one card. I would call the CCC and ask them to break up that one card into two, with one card at $29,000 and the other one at $11,000.

Re: High Credit Card Limits

When I had my USAA cards at $30K and $7K, the $30K card was being factored into util. I watched carefully as things changed around --see, there's a reason that I compulsively pull reports! --and I'm certain that it was being counted.

But I was wary enough about it that I changed the limits to $27K and $10K, just to make sure that nothing would go whacko on me. (I also liked having both cards be 5-digit CL's.)

I agree that somewhere around $30K is the magic figure.

Ooh, I should add that Psychic mentioned that EQ and TU doesn't count them in util at $30,000, but EX does. He will correct me if I don't have that right, I am sure.

Ahh, that would make sense. Because it's also EX that counts relatively-low CL HELOC's in util, while the others don't.

MidnightVoice is our sad voice of experience on this, lol. I think his HELOC CL is right at $30K, and EX figures it into his util, while EQ and TU don't, and his EX score is notably lower than the other two. Not that he's hurting, but I do try to work up some sympathy for him. Smiley Wink

Re: High Credit Card Limits

Thanks to everyone who responded. My problem with my outsized (for me anyway) is a NFCU card that I combined with another card. Originally I had a MC and the nRewards card at 20K each. I combined the MC into the Visa. I don't think they will undo the combination and I will not under any circumstances apply for or open any more new accounts. Do you think they might be willing to reopen the closed MC and allow me to retain the history and bring both cards back to their original 20K limits? I currently have 6 revolving and 1 installment accounts so I have to watch what I let report each month. Utilization is no problem always at 1-2% total number of accounts with a balance might be. Any suggestions?

Actually, EX and TU don't count high credit line cards with limits of approximately $29,000+ when calculating utilization.  EQ does. When you look at my signature scores, you'll see that my EX and TU scores didn't change at all last year.  However, EQ increased slightly.   I was showing a balance on a $33,300 credit limit card at that time.  EX and TU didn't count that balance, but EQ did.

When I inquired about EX's and TU's $29,000 thresholds, it was speculated that this probably might be the amount when balances are not calculated into revolving debt calculations.   No one knew for certain.

Re: High Credit Card Limits

I am not sure about EQ and EX but TU did not even acknowledge that I used the card last month. On the summary page the number 3 neggie was did not use a credit card. It was listed as an account with a balance on the credit at a glance page.
