I dont know if this helps or is even relevant but when I had a LOC with MBNA, my statment would say that I could [ay $15 this month because of my good payment history but in the fine print it stated that the $15 must also be enough to pay the monthly interest charge.

Hi, spiritbee, welcome to the forums, although sorry it was in such nerve-wracking circumstances.

As you can see from all the other entries, this is a brand-new problem that has occurred, so the mechanisms for fixing it are not yet in place. Very few people seem to even be aware of it!

Do you have any previous credit reports where your SM is reporting properly? I would print them out and guard them, and print out this new one. If you are in the process of applying for something, be sure to show both your previous reports and this one, so that lenders can see that nothing has materially changed.

Once the news of this hits the lending world, lenders will be familiar with the problem and will have figured out a way to account for it, although I'm sure it will take a while.

I was just thinking last night of the ramifications of this: who are likely to have these loans? College-educated people, the younger ones getting into the mortgage market, the older borrowers getting well into establishing their credit histories, professional people, you name it...

There is going to be such a broad spectrum of people affected that Sallie Mae won't be able to ignore this. I think it's going to wind up being fixed; the only question is how quickly.

I have taken the suggestions of getting my report from 4/1 where Sallie Mae is showing correctly but another problem is that Sallie Mae changed the account numbers on these loans. Will that make it more difficult to show they are the same loans? And does anybody know WHY the account numbers would change with this new way of reporting?

ETA:

Anybody living in NY state who is having this problem should RUN and contact Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. AG Cuomo is the man who has lead the charge against deceptive lending practices within the student lending industry. Although he has focused mostly on relationships between lenders and colleges, I am sure that he will jump all over this. Most lenders are scared of him because he makes everything so high profile.

rse2008: I read somewhere along the way that SM only reports to EQ now, not TU or EX. However, if I'm not mistaken, they do show up on all 3 for me. So I'm not sure what that means... Only EQ has changed due to this error though.

Pil, On Friday when I got the email from scorewatch I tried to get free copies of the rest of my credit reports and was able to get one from experian but not Trans Union. MY SM account is on EX but it is only reported until March. April was when all this started to happen. SM said I elected a graduated repayment option under a prior lender and there is no way to offer to pay more and be off the list. RSE

I have the grad choice 2 plan, though I only have 2 months left of it. I have no doubt that if you WANT TO change to the Level plan, if you call up they will let you do that. But I don't think there's any reason to do this at this point. I'm waiting for a week to see what happens before doing anything drastic.

The annoying part here is I was planning to consolidate my private loans to get rid of this outrageous 11% rate I have on one of them. That's the only reason I have the scorewatch trial right now. Oh well, I waited 2 years, what's another couple months?

Pil, Because they say I elected the graduated option years ago under a prior lender there is no way to increase my payment outside of just paying more. FYI I was just trying to file an online dispute with Equifax and there is no way to do this type of dispute online.

The Sallie Mae reps really do not know what they are talking about. Graduated repayment plans are legitimate payment plans for Federal Stafford loans. All lenders offer a gradated repayment plan, including the federal government's direct federal loans. I work in the financial aid industry and have not heard a word about graduate repayment plans being a derogatory plan. In addition I have kept up on some of most recent legislation from Congress and have not found anything saying that the way loans are reported should be changed. If this were the case wouldn't we have heard from others on this forum who have student loans with other lenders? Interesting that it is just Sallie Mae reporting this way.

Even if Sallie Mae is able to push a button tomorrow and fix this, it is inexcusable. The pain and fear this is causing people is beyond comprehension. Although I am sure that I can show my mortgage lender that nothing has changed since they pre-approved me, I am going to have to jump through a lot of hoops to get this figured out. In the meantime I have contacted my Congressmen, the local news stations, and my state Attorney General Consumer Unit. Also if I suffer any financial loss (rate jacks, lowered credit limits) I plan on contacting an attorney as soon as possible.
