AMEX Just Hit Me with Annual Fee

Despite what their website says (and still says when I look at their cards and it shows my card next to it under "Compare Your Card") the first year is apparently not so introductory. I called them a week ago about the fee saying that I was supposed to have it waived the first year, and they told me they'd investigate. Nothing happened. Called back just now, gave me the same run around. Said they couldn't reimburse but I could app for another card w/ promo. I said no thanks, transfer me to a supervisor. On hold now...

Is there a backdoor number for this kind of stuff where I don't have to deal with these clowns?

Just to update since I assume I'm not the only one this has happened to, I asked for a supervisor, she put me on hold and 5 minutes later came back and told me that they would be able to waive the fee after all. Don't let them stonewall you into keeping your money for the first year.

What card did you have and what was the AF ? When you apply you have to make sure that you are using the link to the offer with the waived AF, the regular application will include the AF.

I'm glad that you were able to get thru to someone who could remove it for you.

It was just a green card...I got a preapproval in the mail. Went online, it had the offer with the annual fee waived. Clicked it, filled out the application and was approved.

They knew, they just wanted to make it hard on me.

I'm actually surprised you had a rep tell you no! They are usually super nice, quick, and apologetic of such things. I have even been refunded $175 I think it was for Delta or whatever.... had it about 5-6 months and I asked to PC because the rewards just would never work for my spending at time, they usually pro-rate but she said since I was unhappy with the product she was going to refund the entire thing!!

Yeah they screwed that one up. Green card always has the first year waived. Glad to see they worked it out for you.

Both reps told me the same thing. They were very polite, but said the same thing. Just hope that AMEX doesn't keep an internal list of customer notes where later on when they process me for a better card, they look and go "Oh no, this guy was a jackass" lol.

Amex phone CSRs have been hit or miss for me lately too. Next time send a secure message on your online account. I've found they are best at resolving issues in a timely manner.

I've been getting nothing but foreign call centers for my Amex Blue. Friendly and nice people, absolutely, but they are certainly limited and unable to understand my requests nearly every time. I have hardly been using my Amex anymore.

Yep, both times I called I got Mod Cut call centers.

Why is that a mod cut? I almost always ask. Yesterday I also called my Walmart card and she said she was in Ohio. I wasn't racially profiling the agents. I was providing factual information based on what I was I told directly by the CSR.

They did the same to me! I sent them a secure message asking why if I refer a friend, my "friend" will recieve a $0 AF for the first year, yet I still had to pay. My AF hit last month, and I paid, because I didn't realize they were also offering an introductory offer for new cardholders as well. They credited back my AF, which means I got the 10k MR points, plus a $0 AF :smileywink:
