To clear something up; no one is EVER an "AU" on an AMEX card\account. They are an ADM (Additional Card MEMBER) and as such, if they are an adult, they can be held financially responsible for that account as well as the Primary account holder.

So I can see the logic of them being able to retain the date they were added as an ADM when they apply for their own AMEX. It's almost like being a joint account holder.

And truth be told, there are some responsibilities being an AU on any account, these usually pop up if the Primary account holder passes away. Know the facts before assuming anything regarding that.

Sadly, due to policy changes that occurred November of 2011, the reps, even in the CB dept are more than confused and going with the safest option regarding the subject, and that is to say no, to almost anything regarding something along the line of "BackDating" even if they're wrong.

Just got my new gold card, and with it a member since 2012 stamp. I was an AU on a amex account way back in 1998 and the account has since closed. I called 1800492334 CS number, and reached a rep(offshore) and explained that my member date was wrong, and I had a green card back in 1998, and could she look up my info to see and change. She was able to find the account from 1998, but since I was just an AU, and the account has been closed that I can not use that date, she was very dismissive about the whole idea. Should I keep calling? What should I say? Do I have any chance is getting a 98 member date? Thank, guys!

I don't think you will get the backdating since you were an AU on the account. I'm pretty sure you have to be the primary cardholder to get backdating. If the account were still open and active it might be a different story.

I tried to get my new one backdated to match the one I already carried....No go.

I am 99% sure that you have to be the primary cardholder to have future accounts backdated. Otherwise theoretically you could have an account backdated to before you were even born.

My understanding is that you can backdate to the year you became a cardholder or ACM. You used to be able to backdate to the primary cardholder's MS date even if you were added as an ACM years later, but no more.

Wow, I think there might be 300 posts on this board about back dating as and AU. Amex gold is not a ZERO AF card, so I think we can hope for some benefits, esp. since it has been a policy for years to award AU this privilege. Thanks for your two cents .
