Every store card has its own set of benefits, but to disparage them all is to miss out on a lot of potential gains.

- private sales A lot of the high-end department store cards (e.g. Neiman Marcus) entitle the holders to private, unadvertised sales in the store and online. Granted, NM has the nickname Needless Markup for good reason and you could probably find better marked prices online than in their store. But in a lot of cities like mine, they are the only place in town that carries certain brands. So these private sales enable you to get the same price or better than what you could find online, AND you actually get to try the clothes on.

- everyday discounts The Wal-Mart card currently has a 15-cent discount per gallon of gas. In my neighborhood, that's an effective 4-5% discount on what is already the best gas price in town. Other store cards can offer high percentage discounts on purchases that far exceed what you get from a more general-use rewards card.

- targeted offers - One of the big reasons stores offer their own cards is because it enables them to track your spending. e.g. I've received targeted-offer coupons from Best Buy that were not one of their regular advertised offers.

- loyalty reward programs - The argument that these are often used to entice you into paying more than the best price just to get the rewards is correct. Frequent flyer programs work on the same principle. But just like FF programs, they can be great when used wisely. With loyalty shopper programs the strategy is the same as with FF programs: join the program for every place where you shop/fly regularly. Pay the best price, but don't miss out on the rewards. I use my BestBuy card to buy things that are already cheaper at Best Buy than anywhere else. This is particularly easy to do with their price match guarantee.

- zero-interest financing - For those of us who PIF, a useless benefit. But for those who do not, a valuable one. Plus, many stores give extra rewards when you finance the purchase

- sign up bonuses - Usually you get a large discount on your first purchase. This is the least valuable benefit and certainly one I would not personally consider worth getting a card for unless the card also had some of the longer-term benefits above. There are quite a few store cards out there whose sole benefit is this signing bonus, after which they're just a high-APR no-rewards card. I suspect these are the ones drawing a lot of the anti-store-card sentiment in this thread. And I share that sentiment with respect to these particular cards. But there are also many cards with the more lucrative benefits above, instead of or in addition to the sign up bonus.

If you can't see the value in any of these, then so be it. I certainly make some similar arbitrary judgements. I run most of my purchases through reward cards of some sort but I still pay my rent with a check and I'm not going to do some elaborate scheme to be able to pay my rent on credit card just for 1% or 2% in rewards. The hassle of that particular scheme isn't worth the reward...to me. And really, "to me" are the operative words there.

To insist that store cards are useless is blind ignorance. Most have at least one of the benefits above, and have their uses for some people in some situations. If that person isn't you, it's no skin off your nose, or mine.

To insist, on the other hand, that particular store cards are useless to you, that's a valid and reasonable opinion. We all have different situations, different needs, different spending habits, different credit behavior. One man's junk is another man's treasure. Call it junk if it's junk to you, but if you believe in civil discourse then stop short of calling another man a fool just because he sees it as treasure.

store cards in general tend to be easier to get than non-store branded credit cards.

Some give perks - and what they are differ from card to card.

Walmart has a promo that you spend so much you get interest free for so long (not sure if its all the time or they offer it so often).

Walmart usually gets promoted heavily because its usually a pretty easy card to build up the CL on over time as well as with the paperfree billing you get your TU score monthly.

My wife has a VS credit card - she gets discounts, and promos every month and the points system are better than nothing. In the end its saved some money vs if she paid cash and never had the card - she was going to go and buy her undies there anyways might as well save a few bucks when she does.

Rewards, coupons, financing promos (0% for X months). There are lots of reasons to use store cards.

But if there aren't any discounts or financing offers, I would definitely use a bank card with some kind of rewards.

Macys was the first card I was approved for, so I keep it for the history. They also give 20% off coupons and free return shipping to higher teir card holders. Amazon was the second card I got. I only use it if I want to finance something for a year or more.

The only store card I have is a Kohl's card, and I get up to 30% off of things with it, so I consider that very worth using, especially since I get pretty much all of my clothes at Kohl's.

Store cards definitely have their place in the credit market. Stores use them to get you to buy more as studies show that you are inclined to spend more with a CC vs. cash. They entice you into the store usually by discounts/promotions of some kind. For some, if you typically shop at a certain store, the discounts can add up. Or in the case with home improvement cards - they radomly offer 0% financing for longer than some CC's offer - also without the need to apply for a new CC to get the 0%.

I personally don't have any store cards yet, but if I develop a trend where I tend to shop at a store often and the rewards look good, I might app for one in the future.

I think its completly worth it. Easier to get, great promotions, discounts, no interest, and another way to rebuild credit for many of us. There are definitely perks to having one. However, I wouldn't get one just to get it if you don't shop there often. I'm a regular shopper at Walmart and Amazon so having these two cards is a definite plus.

Best buy offers 10% off ink if you use your store card. They also offer price matching. So using a store card to buy ink at best buy is one of the cheapest local ways to buy ink. You also get 4% (4.5% for premier members) back in rewards if you choose standard financing. So, that is one of many ways a store card can be useful.

I only have cards to stores I shop at often. Because of the ridiculous APR's store cards have, it forces me to PIF each statement versus sometimes carrying a balance on my Visa or MC.

I use my VS because of the discounts I get. I don't have a store locally anymore so I purchase online. They allow up to 3 coupon codes, so I have gotten some signigicant savings, especially when I shop in their sale section. I use my Belk card because of coupons. When they have sales, which they do often, and you use a coupon, sometimes you get additional savings by using your Belk card on top of everything else. I used my Ashley Homestore card to finance furniture at 0% interest and paid it off well before the time frame given and I've used my Kay Jeweler's card for their 0% financing before. I use my Walmart card only occasionally and have never taken advantage of special financing offers. However, I do like that I can get a little cash back if I am low on cash when using my card, have the free TU score monthly and that that I can increase my CL every four months.
