I'm curious about this too. I know they're not supposed to affect your score after one year, but there must be *some* reason they stay on your report for 2 years.

For FICO scoring they are only considered in a one year period, also mortgage and auto inquiries that are close together are counted as a single inquiry so shopping for a major loan isn't penalized.

They stay on there so whomever you are requesting credit from can see your past history/desires more accurately. A person with lots of recent inquiries creates a red flag.

I would venture to say yes. I have seen some denied for too many inquiries when they only had 1 or 2 within the last 12 months, but several over a year old.

Both credit reports and their associated FICO scoring are tools that a creditor can choose to use or not to use, and the extent to which any factor affects their decision is up to them, provided of course their consideration does not violate any other provision of law, such as illegal discrimination.

The fact that FICO chooses to discontinue inclusion of inquiries in their scoring after one year is based on their determination that such inquiries are no longer risk-predictive.

I would suspect that most creditors, seeing inquiries over one year, would reach the same conclusion.
