Financing a car without a drivers license in Ohio?

My girlfriend has a learners permit, and she has good credit, which is why we want an auto loan for her. I'd be escorted off the property if I applied for an auto loan!

So in Ohio, is she able to get an auto loan with only a state ID? What about insurance?

Legally, you can get both without a driver's license. However some dealerships/insurance companies might be difficult to deal with.

From a dealer's perspective as long as you have a state ID, so they can verify your identity they will be fine. As far as financing it really depend's on the bank, some lender's require valid driver's Licenses, some do not. To my knowledge, Well's Fargo Dealer Services does not require a copy of a valid DL to fund a contract. Some other lender's are the same way, some (like Ally) require a valid DL.

Will the car be for your girlfriend or for you? From the way you stated the question, it sounds like you may be having her finance it for you? In that case, I would be very cautious as that is considered a straw purchase which is prohibited by lender's (a straw purchase is when someone finances a vehicle on another person's behalf, the only time someone can finance a vehicle for another person is a parent financing a vehicle for a minor.)

No, it would be here driving and using the car most times.

So the Wells Fargo Dealer Services are at which dealers? Is there a good list of dealers that would allow this type of financing?

I own a large truck and she won't drive it, or even try, so we need a car to have her practice to get her license ASAP.

Wells Fargo Dealer Services is available at most franchised dealerships (ie Ford, Toyota, GM, etc) and even some that aren't (used car lots)

It's not dependent on the state or dealership, its the bank. I remember when I worked at Chase auto, we had a situation where a woman was purchasing a car for her caregiver to drive. The car would be hers, but she didn't have a driver's license. It took about an hour of moving up the chain of command, but it was approved.

Not to ask a dumb question about straw purchases, but I have to assume that spouses are OK to buy cars for the other's use?!?  An earlier post only refers to children of the purchaser.

It really depends on the lender as each lender has their own definition of a "straw purchase" In my state, a spouse can finance a vehicle in just their name for their spouse (must be legally married) and most lender's will not consider that a straw purchase.
