Need a car now

My husband is going to apply for an auto loan.  His FICO score is 634, his debt to income ratio is 9%.  His income is $24935.  He has a credit card through HSBC, credit line is $1000 and balance is $880.  He has paid off most of his student loan in the past year and only $1255 remains.  We have about $500-$1000 available for the down payment and we're talking a cheaper vehicle under $10,000.  Should we go through a bank, credit union or the dealership for financing?

Thanks!
