2 years into Chapter 13-this is hard!

hi, I'm new. Never posted before. I am trying to hang in there with my Chapter 13- it's been hard. I'm looking into ways I can help re-build my credit while still in my 13- got 3 more years left. Also- where is the best place to get my credit scores? Thanks so much.

Re: 2 years into Chapter 13-this is hard!

I have never filed a Chapter 13 before but just trust and believe it will get better.  I am sure TRC_WA has some sound advice on how to get through the 13 process.  As well as others who have filed and completed their chapter 13.

Good Luck

Thank you for the wealth of knowledge I have learned from these forums. I am logging off as of November 9, 2022. I wish everyone great success.

You can get you FICO scores here.  Links should be at the top of the page.

As far as rebuilding while you are still in Ch 13... I'd advise against it.  Any approvals you can get (secured or unsecured) will be limited by the fact your credit report most likely shows a not yet discharged bankruptcy which will cause red flags with any potential lender.

Also, it's a big no no to apply for new credit without the permission of the trustee.  The trustee is not your friend.  The wrong trustee could make things very difficult for you if he catches wind of credit applications while still under the protection of the court... up to and including dismissal of your case.

It's a big deal.

For the record, I rebuild the profile you see in my sig pretty easily... and I didn't start until the day after my Ch 13 discharge.

I am seven years out from my Chapter 13. It just fell off my credit reports in April/May. You are right. It is so very hard. I lived on the tightest budget imagineable for the first five years using only my debit card. I would have had to get permission to get a credit card before those years were up. Is that how it is with you?

You will have many forum members give you suggestions about your credit scores. I commend your courage for beginning the recovery process early. There is life after Chapter 13. Just know that. Good things happen fast, too. If I can be a resource for you, I am happy to do so. Message me if I can answer any questions about my own experiences.

Thanks for that. I think I'll heed musiclover's advice and not try to build credit yet. It helps reading about other people's situations and how they've made progress. Thanks! 😊

Anytime...

BTW, yes, living on the debit card for 4 years did suck.  Some weeks I literally had $20 left.  I made it through it though and now my consolation prize is I'm just a few months away from everything falling off my credit report.

When it's all over you should feel proud for having completed the plan.  I know I do.  Smiley Wink

Re: 2 years into Chapter 13-this is hard!

You can do it!!! There is BIG life after a 13, but just be patient, disciplined and keep your eye on the prize.

Yes, take it as a lesson to do better with your finances on the other side. That's what the process taught me. I came out wiser and you will too. Hang in there. It gets sweeter!

Re: 2 years into Chapter 13-this is hard!

I totally understand. I basically lived on this fourm in the begining years of my CH13. I read a lot of posts before I even registered. I learned so much it made the process of rebuilding. I agree with everyone, rebuilding is very difficult while still in CH13. It's not impossible. I did recieve approval from my trustee but I stuck with pretty much 1 limit the entire time until discharge no CLI.

It was very difficult to live on such a restricted budget with virtually no wiggle room. In my case the process of going through the Chapter 13 and successfully being discharge was a challenge and taught me a lot of valuable lessons. There are days that I freak out of even a letting a balance report because the thought of debt just made me so scared. Eventually it enabled me to control my finances, live below my means, and learn a lot through all the fourm members here to use credit wisely in your favor. Think of it this way.... if you can manage now (albeit hard) by the time you complete it you will feel rich! LOL (at least I did). Keep the faith and I look forward to hearing your progress throughout this journey!!!!!!!!!!
