Good Day! I was approved for a checking / savings account with NFCU. Now, I'm waiting for my BK to be discharged (sometime in Dec '15). What steps should I take once I obtain my discharge? Should I apply for a secured card with NFCU? or unsecured card?
Grats! Once the BK is discharged, check to make sure your accounts are reporting correctly before applying for anything unsecured. Good luck on your journey!
Make sure not to apply until you are discharged. NFCU will decline until discharged, even for secured.
My experience with NFCU has been great. We opened our checking and savings account right after filing, just like you. We were discharged Jan 2015, after I made sure my reports were all accurate I applied for the Cash Rewards unsecured card, got approved for $500 (the wife got declined).
Six months later I still couldn't get a CLI on the Cash Rewards card but they gave me a $5,000 Signature Rewards Visa and the wife finally got a $9,000 Cash Rewards card.
A few weeks later I was able to increase the CL from $500 to $18,000 on my Cash Rewards card and got a $15,000 CLOC.
Be patient with them, treat them well and they will be your most generous creditor.
Looking to build a solid relationship with NFCU.
