This isn't a question for me but for a friend. The person is an immigrant and about to leave the country to go back home. She was here legally, but has lost her employment and as a result of her immigration status. She has approximately 30k in credit card debt and some student loans (private not federal). She will not be able to make the credit card payments, although she will probably be able to keep up with the student loans. Since she is leaving the country should she file for bankruptcy before doing so? If she is planning on leaving in the next few days will a bankruptcy attorney be able to represent her while she is overseas? is there any benefit to filing a bankruptcy proceeding if she has no real property and is selling her car back to the dealer to pay off the auto loan?
