Yet another question: if we file BK (Ch. 13), can our car insurance drop us?

Interesting question.
Our car insurance did not drop us and our rates did not go up.
I don't know if they could drop you. Ours certainly softs our credit reports frequently. And word is that rates vary depending on your creditworthiness.
Just wasn't an issue for us. We have liberty and did have nationwide. Made a change somewhere along the line - I think we added our auto to our homeowners policy for slightly better rates. Again the BK was a non-issue there.
And we've gotten quotes from other companies - American Family and Geico both come to mind. Neither of them refused us.
Hope that's helpful!

Yikes! I didn't know insurance companies looked at your credit report in determining your rates. I guess it makes sense, now that I think about it, but I always thought it was just based on your driving history. It's especially surprising to me that they might continue to look at your credit report after you've bought a policy.

Yes, I agree that our insurance rate *should* only be based on driving history but I have seen my credit reports and can see the inquiries from our carrier (Farm Bureau) about every 6 months. And I don't want to "open a can of worms" by asking them. ![]()
beammeup, that's good news that at least you didn't contend with that. We've been customers for 4 1/2 years so I would certainly hope that there is some loyalty there. How long did you have your insurance before filing? I wonder if it matters.

Oh, and we do have our homeowner's insurance with the same provider.

Probably 2-3 years. But again, we didn't have any issues with changing the policies or in getting quotes for new policies.
Hopefully, that'll give you one less thing to worry about. ![]()

Talked with close friends who just finished a Ch. 13 BK here in the same town we live in. Their car insurance rates did not go up but their names did appear in the paper when they filed. We live in a small town and I guess they are desperate for news. ![]()

Is that a deal breaker for you?

No, but it is humiliating. I'm glad tht we know this ahead of time if we do decide to file. And I am curious to know if the administration at my university would think poorly of me because of it, i.e. if it would effect their tenure decision in the Fall. I know all that we can do is make the best decision for us now and I just want to understand the condsequences as much as possible before we proceed.

Some folks have options as far as filing for BK, for others it's really their only realistic option.
If this is really what you must do, then you might consider doing the right thing and letting the humiliation go. It'll just make you happier.
No sense in making yourself miserable over things you have no control of.
I think someone else posted that there's not nearly the stigma attached to BK that there once was. I think that's true. And there's probably folks on the committee (or whatever) that renews tenure that have either been through BK or know someone who has. Folks are more compassionate than we might expect. I was worried that it may affect DH's employment but we have not seen that happen.
I thought BK was supremely stressful - so I get it. Devastating. Really. What I learned is that I wasn't all that special - there are lots of other folks in the same situation. Folks who work hard, who try to do the right thing, and who wind up filing BK. Our attorney, after reviewing our case, said we weren't perfect but we were doing most everything right. Life happens. He also said if it could happen to us, it could happen to him. I think my pride was part of the issue when it came to feeling so humiliated. I've learned that I'm like a lot of other good folks, and other good folks sometimes have to file. I've never had a reasonable person come after me for BK. Ours may have been published in the paper, I think it was. I don't know for sure. I know the mortgage company putting our house up for sale pending the BK was definitely in the paper. No one has ever ever been demeaning to me or my family - folks just don't care that much. They know that life happens. It's more okay than your heart is making it.
Hopefully folks don't take as long as I did to grow up, look at the bigger picture, and really enjoy life in spite of the BK. I just hate to know that it can overshadow the real stuff in life - which is SO good. Be mindful of stuff, but don't stress over little things like it showing up in the paper. Folks just don't care much. ![]()
