Help for a friend

I have a friend considering BK. She is needing to know who to talk to about it.  She does not have the money for a BK lawyer, but she is also very tender-hearted, and I am very worried someone may try to take advantage of her in her current situation.  I am not really sure how to help or where to point her.  She really needs someone to assist and will not be comfortable doing the footwork.  Any advice?  Thanks in advance for any help.  She really is a gem, and I just want to give her any direction to someone that may be able to help.

Re: Help for a friend

Is she looking to file Ch 7 or Ch 13?

I'm asking because Ch 13 AFAIK requires no money up front... my attorney fees were factored in to my monthly payment amount.

Whatever route she takes filing BK without an attorney isn't something I'd even consider...

Re: Help for a friend

Timing for a Bk is very, very important.

Is she working at all?

If she is unemployed it is not the right time for her to file.  I agree with the previous poster. There may be some individuals that can file without an attorney and complete the process properly but those are the exceptions and not the rule.

There is a possiblity her credit woes can be better fixed without filing bk at all. Have her come here and post her situation to see if there is another solution or if bk is the right solution, then help guide her to the appropriate timing.  There are some very knowledgeable people on the board.

Re: Help for a friend

Thanks for your replies.  I think I will point her in the direction of these forums.  I don't know enough about her situation really to answer much.  I was mostly wondering if there is some kind of nonprofit that could point her to respectable people that could help her make the right decision.  I really don't want someone shady making her situation worse.  I don't know that she really has the funds for an attorney, but she would definitely need one.  Thanks again for the input.
