I may have to file BK and want to talk to a lawyer first. How do I 'shop' for a BK lawyer?!
If you provide your location (state, possibly court district or metro area) people here may PM
Where are you - city, state, court district? People may be able to PM you referrals.
Hi cantretire,
With or without referrals, my recommendation is to have a no-fee consultation with at least two - preferably three reputable BK attorneys before you decide who to go with. You will receive a great deal of helpful info from the consults and will find which attorneys fit best with your personality.
Also do a little reading (Barnes & Noble - library - whatever) on basic BK (i.e. BK for dummies type stuff). That'll give you a little groundwork and you'll be able to ask better questions of your potential BK attorneys.
But even if you don't have time to do a little reading, you'll benefit enormously from those consultations and you'll have a much better idea of what direction is best for you.
I also have to say that BK attorneys are in the business of filing BK's - so they may or may not be upfront (or even knowledgeable) about other legitimate options that may work well for you.
Best wishes!
Nolo Press has good books on Bankruptcy and credit, they should be in the library.
Thanks for the info everyone. I'll do some research. I'm in Staten Island.
