Got accepted immediately (i'm sure everyone does)
I decided to go ahead and join, get some history and then apply for credit items in about 5mos.
Your assumption is correct Since they use the same pull there is no harm
Ok, decided to app since I had nothing to lose.
declined due to BK and not enough established recent credit.
I filled out the survey they sent me with an explanation and a request of reconsideration.
We'll see what they have to say.
I'm not too worried about it, and 100% don't mind and understand if I need to wait ~6mo or so.
Sorry about that. I've read they are more flexible with finance/re-finance auto loans. You might want to give a try since you have the HP already, also the Thrifty Line of credit (I've seen a buch of people get approved for $500).

Not always correct. I had three HPs from Penfed in one week in December.

As with all credit, YMMV. General consensus is that PenFed will use the same pull. What happened with your situation? That sucks!
First pull was for an auto refi. Instant online approval. After that I figured Penfed was warming up to my credit profile, so I apped for the Promise Visa. It was denied and came with a second HP. So, first two were about an hour apart. The third came three days later when I applied for a checking account.
