I got an email invitation for a CLI today. Filled it out and was approved instantly. I figured it might help to offer some anecdotal experiences.
- Applied for Blue Cash preferred in March 2013. Was not instantly approved and had a manual review. Got a $2000 limit.
- 3 months later. Was instant approved for a 3x increase initiated by me to $6000
- November of 2013 - Automatic increase to $8000
- Today - Received an 'invitation' for "up to" 3000 limit increase. Approved instantly. <<< I'm stopping probably here.
Some other notes:
Since getting the card, I've made $20000 in payments, current balance statement is $1500
Always paid slightly more than statement balance.
I have an authorized user who accounts for about 20% of the activity and pays me back for related purchases. Most recently has started paying AmEx directly.
I have a lot of personal reimurseable/ reimburseable work expenses funneled through the card
My 0% APR period expires next month... which may be related to this latest increase to prompt a credit trap. Not for me!
My only previous credit history is two low limit cards crapital one (500, opened when I turned 18) and my credit union (500 opened ~20). No auto loans,no installment loans, etc. my history is comprised entirely of revolving lines. No baddies on record.
Between rewards rebates, signup bonus and the "offers" section, I've received about $800 in direct cash benefits.
Last month my card was cloned and was used for fraudulent charges in - this doesn't seem to be a factor.
I do a ton of shopping at walmart. =D
Congrats on the CLI.
I, too, received a CLI invitation email from Amex today. Definitely wasn't expecting it on my end, but I'll gladly take it.

Congrats on your CLI and the data points. Very surprising that you've received a manual review and got it approved....was this your first AMEX card? Also, were there any errors on your report that led to overturn their decision?
First Amex and never had any errors on my report... and I check them religiously.
I may have misspoke with I said, "Manual" - I wasn't instantly approved, it took a few days of processing and THEN it was approved. I didn't call for a reconsideration after a decline or anything on my part. So, not sure if "manual" is the right word for this.
Sounds like you managed your account like a pro
.......$23k....................$8k......................$2k
Current FICO EQ: 775, EX: 764 | Current FAKO CK: 788

Got it.

Grats to your success OP
Congrats to both the OP and Will!
Hopefully I can get a nice CLI at day 61
