Not necessary to be logged in.... Amex will immediately identify you by ss#. SP if denied... HP if approved. There have been mishaps. Not common place though.

At this point better safe than sorry yes wait until you get the card and your online account is setup... unless you want to take the chance of another HP maybe yes.... maybe not
