Is it safe to assume (even though I became a member last month) that because I have a savings account($2.5k and rising each month---deployment $$) and an auto loan ($3700) that my chances are good to get to $5k?? Or should I request more and hope for a counter?

This $2k line, What other credit cards do you have?
A 640ish score I have seen $7k+ approvals... Go for $10k and hope for counter and then sit tight for 6 months

I would request $10K see what they counter with. Let them do the counter.

$5K and above put you in the VISA signature territory

I pulled the trigger and asked for $5k...if that comes back yes, I'll be elated...then I'll tend to the garden for the rest of the year...I'm also doing SL rehab. Once those baddies come off, get picked up, and reset positive payment history(fingers crossed), hopefully my scores jump, and then ill apply for a couple more cards....my other cards are cap1 secure, $200--0 balance, and cap1 CR $750---$330 balance...puts my util @ 11.5%....

Usually all requests for CLI that are not instant or instant counter are going to be HP.
