Navy Fcu is known for high Cl, how does PenFed do in this area? Same?

This is amazing. TOTALLY jumping all over this!! Please let me know!

PenFed Q: what do you mean hard pull good for 90(30) days?

Penfed soft-pulls Equifax NextGen 2 (a variation of the Equifax FICO score only used by Penfed among credit-card issuers) every quarter in February, May, August and November. Those scores remain good for up to 90 days - I think this would depend on what time in the quarterly cycle you applied at, so the earlier the better if you want multiple products - and will be used by Penfed in reviewing any credit applications you make to them during the quarter. The really cool thing is that when Penfed updates their members' FICO scores, they will often put up offers on the account main pages (down in the lower right-hand quadrant). Those offers will be contained in a box marked "My Offers", and there may be smaller boxes for credit-card and auto-loan (including other vehicles) offers, as well as a text link saying "See All Offers". The real jackpot is in those smaller boxes I just mentioned. If you click the button in either of those boxes marked "Apply" or "Accept", you may get taken to a page where you're tendered at least one pre-approved offer for a card with a solid single-figure APR and SL offer. This won't put an additional HP on your record, since the pull has already been done. If you choose to accept the offer, all you need to do is fill out the credit application, updating as necessary, and sign the credit card agreement, and then wait with varying degrees of patience for your shiny new Penfed card. That's how I got my Power Cash Rewards (still waiting for it in the mail - I would have to apply right in the middle of the 4th of July holiday weekend! Smiley Tongue - but my new account information is all set up and ready to go on my Penfed member page) last weekend. I clicked that little "Apply" button in the little "Credit Cards" box and was presented with pre-approved offers for either the PCR or the Promise at 17.74% (PCR) or 16.74% (Promise) and a $3K SL on either one. Selected PCR and the rest is history.

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

PenFed has traditionally kept a HP for credit that can be used for up to 90 days; lately people have reported getting an additional HP after 30 days were up.

So if you join, they will pull EQ for memebership. That same credit pull can be used to apply for any credit products for the next 90 days.

Re: The Official Credit Unions Guide

I don't believe anyone has mentioned this particular credit union before, but does anyone here belong to Electel Cooperative Federal Credit Union? It's a small regional CU which mainly serves employees of various electric and telephone cooperatives in North Carolina and Virginia, but also consumers who purchase electricity services from some of those cooperatives (including the one I belong to, Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative or NOVEC). I got a flyer with my current NOVEC bill yesterday, which made me wonder about them. They offer a Visa CC, but there doesn't seem to be anything special about it, just a basic no-frills Platinum Visa.

I've been seeing members say that their ACH/avabilability of funds needs work. Is this still the case? I wouldn't want to set up a bill pay and have my payment be late because my bank is slow.

Mobile deposits are either instant or credited within an hour with Navy Federal. I'm not sure why you would want to do ACH, which takes days to be applied, since mobile deposit is so readily available and is very fast. Just fyi. Smiley Happy

Thank you for this!  My old-school brain would never have thought of just writing a check to myself and taking a picture of it...ahh, the world we live in these days  Smiley Happy

Unless you've recently joined Penfed, as they disable check deposits on their mobile app until you've been a member for 6 months. Penfed even limits ACH "pulls" from external accounts to $50/day for the first 6 months, so I have to "push" ACH deposits to them from external accounts. Smiley Frustrated

I'm well aware of PenFed's training wheels (New member as of 3/23/2017) - you didn't mention my favorite one:  They put an automatic 'payment float' for 10 days on any payments to a credit card account.  That means that while they credit your payment immediately, your available credit does not reflect the payment until the end of the 10 days.

Although I have heard that they unlock mobile deposits at 3 months rather than 6...but I'm not there yet so cannot confirm.

But after the training wheels are off, CC payments are instant, and Available credit is updated immediately

NFCU $60.4k/PenFed $22.5k/Commerce $15K/53 $11K/Synovus $14K/BBT $11K/CapOne $12K/DCU $7.5K/BMO $7.5K/Chase $14.5k/Cabelas $10K/ and many many more!
Total CL $398600, plus car and RV loan.
Ooh. Ooh. Getting closer to that $500K mark!

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

Here's some more data on credit unions that are open to all:

Hiway FCU - EQ HP to join, will reuse for 90 days

Marine FCU (Jacksonville NC) - EQ SP

Sandia Labs FCU (SLFCU) - Here's the response verbatim, but something doesn't seem right. A triple pull for membership?!

"Upon applying for membership it will pull a full credit report and it goes through all three credit bureaus. If you apply for a credit card they will pull another inquiry and they go through Experian for all loans." - Does anyone have experience with these guys?

SCE FCU - EX SP

Connexus CU - HP "most often utilized is TransUnion" - CCs are Elan, so would be another HP

Still waiting for answers on a few others!

Spreadsheet is updated: https://goo.gl/7Uar9b

On another note - anyone have recent experience with UNFCU? I gave them another shot, but I'm not too impressed so far. Upside- the app process is totally online now. No need to snail mail stuff. The not so good: They wanted a W-9, utility bill, copy of DL, etc. Within 2 minutes of submitting them, they rejected my electric bill for being 5 months old, so I reuploaded it. 2 (business) days later, it's still being reviewed. I chatted online to see if the new documents were acceptable, and the rep never said anything (Not even a canned response), so I asked the question, and I just got a rather curt response. Anyone else have less-than-stellar customer service experiences with them?

Several questions about Apple FCU, as I'm considering joining this weekend (I almost did a couple weeks ago but decided to put it off a bit longer).

Do they do hard pulls for basic membership (savings), and if so, which bureau?

Do they do hard pulls for checking accounts?

Is there a waiting period for applying for a credit card after joining?

Which bureau do they pull for credit card apps?

Here's the response I got when I emailed them:

We received your message below and would love for you to join Apple FCU. To answer your questions, we use Transunion.

We have the ability to do a soft inquire on credit scores but once we start the loan application as a whole, it will be a hard pull. Once we create the loan application we have 5 days to use that same report.

So: SP to join (TU)

HP for credit (TU)

You can apply for a credit card before joining, then when approved they'll do the membership then

Just fyi, but you do need to be a member of Apple FCU prior to applying for any products. I'm not a member; however it states on their site that you need to be a member prior to applying for a credit card or loan product. Hope this helps someone. Smiley Happy

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

Joined Bethpage FCU last week. Online process is simple and fairly quick. It's only a SP to join and anyone can join.

I called and spoke to a loan specialist. They pull EX FICO 8 for all CCs and loans. That pull is on file for 30 days. The auto loan rates are phenomenal! They beat my favorite auto loan CU (Penfed) quite easily in the rate department. A 730 EX FICO 8 will get you a tier 1 rate on any of their products.

Figured I'd put them in my back pocket for now until I need another auto loan.

Re: Official Credit Unions Guide

Question to All:

Thinking about joing NFCU and or Bethpage Credit Union, Advantages // Disadvantages ???..

I'm back on a rebuild process and trying to get back to a 700+ credit score again.

Just recently got approved from Honda Financial (Auto Loan) 7/17, and not trying to apply for new credit until end of the year when I re-fi with MCU on a personal loan.

Scores are slowing creeping back up. However, I have an big UTI problem which I'm trying very hard to address. Need suggestions.

I can't think of any disadvantages to joining credit unions. Unless they are pull happy for membership and charge you to keep your money. Bethpage won't affect your credit at all.

+1 to Gmood1's points

NFCU is an awesome credit union. I've never had an issue with their customer service, or any product I've had with them. They're generally very generous with credit card and CLOC limits, and every year you can request an APR reduction if you don't already have the best one. (They've lowered mine a couple of times) Their car loans seem to have a stricter u/w standard, so I haven't found them to be very competitive there. Their deposit rates are very meh compared to other places you can find out there. There's also a HP to join, and they DO NOT reuse HPs. I definitely think the positives outweigh the negatives though.

If you're looking for a great CU with great rates that doesn't HP to join, here are a couple of add'l options:

Air Force FCU offers rewards checking - SP on EQ

Alliant Credit Union - SP on EQ

Evansville Teachers CU - SP on TU (has rewards checking)

Unify FCU - SP on EX
