Chase Reconsideration Experience (Approved)

Today I applied for the Chase Freedom card. I have an equifax score of 750 and expected that the chances were pretty good for getting approved. After submitting the application online, I got a message saying that they could not approve the application. Called the recon line and spoke to someone who told me they declined it because I had too many new credit cards (referred to in online forums as the 5/24 rule). Two of the 5 recent cards (within last 2 years) for me were cards that I am an authorized user on, one of which I did not want to be on (a parent added me to it without consulting me first). I explained this to the people I spoke to. The first two people I spoke to were not very friendly in my opinion and they told me that even though two cards were authorized user cards they could not reconsider my application. They did not seem to care at all about trying to help me at least get it reconsidered. I finally called the recon line (888-270-2127) back a 3rd time and explained to the person that I did not feel that the people I spoke with fairly looked at my application and asked to speak to a supervisor. She was friendly and transferred me to an application supervisor in the lending department. The supervisor was very friendly and said she was happy to do a reconsideration. After verifying some income and employment information and waiting on hold for 5 minuets, she told me that she completed her review and the application would need to be reviewed further by another department. She said it was neither approved or declined and I would be notified of the decision in 1-2 weeks. The wait now begins! If you dont feel that someone you spoke to on the recon line fairly examined your application, dont hesitate to ask for a supervisor! Always be polite of course, but there clearly is some discretion that these people have. I was discouraged after speaking to the first two people, but finally had some success with a supervisor! I will post an update when I receive the recon decision!

Mod note:  I've updated your subject to reflect your approval; feel free to change/edit if you would like.  --UB

Re: Chase Reconsideration Experience

My experience was similar.  The first rep I talked to was monotone and script reading.  I was transferred to talk to someone else who was friendly and asked me some questions about my finances, credit report, and employment.  I was put on hold on two different occasions, but still ended up being declined.  Despite being declined, the actual reconsideration experience was fine.

Re: Chase Reconsideration Experience

Glad you were finally able to get through and get your application reconsidered! It is so frustrating when they will not even reconsider your application, especially when there are important specific circumstances!

Re: Chase Reconsideration Experience

I got approved for Freedom but declined for FU. Tried to recon 2 times. Was declined because: 1) my history was too young (just over 1 year old) 2) had a few HPs within last 3 mo (SP for leasing in December, 2 HP from Cap1 and AMEX for business credit cards) 3) 1 new account they asked me a lot about (I was AU on that account but it was pretty new)

Re: Chase Reconsideration Experience

Good luck 🍀. I have some choice words for some folks at the Chase Lending and Risk department. I’ll refrain from using them but I wish you the best.

Re: Chase Reconsideration Experience

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and for sharing your experiences! I have some good news! I went into my Chase bank account online today, and sure enough the Chase Freedom card is showing. They approved me for a $500 limit. Not much but it at least allows me to get my foot in the door and prove myself! It really did pay off to be persistent with them! Hope this expeirence can be a help to someone else in the future!
