Unfortunately no one in my immediate family has ever served in the armed forces or has had a government position or anything so NFCU has always been out of the question for my situation. None of my grandparents have ever served either.

I had actually considered joining the Air Force during my year off from college though and heard a little bit about NFCU from someone who had been in basic training and all of that stuff. Figures.
