i applied in store for a non amex macys card. Approved for 1000. I have about 5 recent inquiries and 5 new cards in the last 6 months. I figured I didn't need the amex account since I would already be getting the savings now. All scores are about 715.

If your score is 715 you should have been able to get the AMEX...

I didn't really see any added benefits other than cash back for getting the amex. I really only got it cause it saved me $80 on that purchase. It asks you which do you want to apply for. I usually buy a bunch of clothes at once. So if there more benefit from a catagories card like chase or discover I'll use that instead. It'll pretty much be a sock drawer card most of the time.
