The CO was around 8k but I settled and paid about half.
How hard or easy was it to settle for half? Was it through AMEX? Who did you call actually? And finally, how long after you settled, were you approved? I'm in similar situation as you, but two cards totalling aroung $13K from 2007 CO's. Since then, have re-established to over 700's across all bureau's.

Can someone explain the process of backdating
Amex used to backdate accounts if you had a previous relationship and ended it, then restarted a new one.
They still show 'member since 2004' on the card and the statement, howvwer, they no longer change the date that shows on your account details on your actual credit report as 'date opened'.
In days of old, they would change that date to match the dtae of your oldest account with them. This would change your 'AAoA' and make it longer.
They stopped it last spring.
