Just a guess here, but I think that upgrade matrix (cards available to upgrade, what features you want, etc) they might go ahaed and do the hard pull. I was always under the impression it was soft if you had been a member.

Yeah I'm not sure the issue. A quick call to AMEX might enlighten the situation.
