2 apps one inquiry? I might have.....

Too early to tell for sure but I just did applications with Amex yesterday. I seized the limited time 75,000 point offer for Amex Business Gold. Approved. Then, while still on the phone with application rep, I contemplated getting the SPG biz card as well. I even told the rep I may as well try now to see if I get two inquries or just the one. She assured me I would get two. But I was curious if Experian would disregard the second because it had the same date. I didn't apply. I waited. Later on around 11.40 last night, I pulled the trigger. Approved.

After the first application for the Gold, I checked Freecreditreport.com and sure enough: Inquiry by Amex dated 5/17/13. So, this morning, I updated my report and I still only have the one inquiry listed. Hmmmmm.

Is this a Freecreditreport.com glitch? Not sure. I know that new inquiries show up instantly so I should have had two inquiries from Amex yesterday but I only have one. If this holds, my experiment and hopes will have been successful, What a bargain. two cards, one inquiry and no effect on AAoA since both are business.

We'll see.....

You will have only one inquiry for the Amex cards which you apply with in 30 days... Second inquiry will be a soft pull .. Also u will be eligible for only 2 revolve cards for a period of 90 days ... If you submit another application now it will be cancelled with above said reason.. Congratulation on ur success and u will sure enjoy Amex relationship in all ways ... Happy weekend and enjoy the two successes ..

Just a clarification ~ this is only true if you are denied for the second application. Anytime you are approved for an AMEX it will result in another hard inquiry, with a few exceptions, possibly like the OP described. Sometimes a second AMEX app which is submitted immediately after the original app won't result in another hard pull ~ but it doesn't always work out that way.

Re: 2 apps one inquiry? I might have.....

Cardslifeline,

thanks for the tip! So the reps are very misinformed on this matter aren't they?

So does this mean going forward? If I do an additional application for any Amex card I may be approved with no hard inquiry? Is this personal or business alike? I am asking this because I have no personal Amex card yet. I knew that I could apply for one and get no inquiry, I may just do that.

Re: 2 apps one inquiry? I might have.....

Pizzadude,

OK. Just saw your clarification. that whole 30 or 90 day thing did seem a little too good to be true. However, on what I just did, I had a good feeling it might work because it was the same day and both were business....though one was cobranded.

Next time (whenever that may be), I will try a personal and business on the same day and see if that yileds the same result.

Anyone reading this have experience with that tactic? Curious....

As of Jan 2012, neither of the highlighted items above are acurate.

I added 3 revolvers in Jan 2012 (BCE, Clear, HHonors), I apped all one immediately right after the other. BCE was instant approval, manual review on the other 2. After a couple of days. the Clear and HHonors were also approved. In the end, I ended up with 2 inquiries.

Re: 2 apps one inquiry? I might have.....

I apped a couple of nights ago for a BCP and got THREE HP (EQ, TU AND EX) AND got the dreaded 14 day notice.   Still says "In Process" on the AMEX application status page.
