I recently came to know through my friend that we get 5% cashback from Discover for purchasing in Walmart. Is it true? I know that we get it if we purchase through ShopDiscover but is there any if we go and do it on store?
I have purchased through shop Discover and then went to store and picked it up right away. That's the only way I know to do it and get the 5%.

I know its not 5% with walmart card. I have heard of people with Sallie Mae who were able to get walmart to count as groceries, so hence getting 5%.

Only if the Walmart is coded as groceries. The Walmart Neighborhood Markets are coded as grocery stores (obviously), I think supercenters are sometimes coded as grocery stores, but the "regular" walmarts are usually coded otherwise, as discount stores or something (no 5% on SM).
yes i should have noted it depends on what kind of walmart you have. Here we have regular walmarts so usually gets coded as discount store.

No has to be online. I've never gotten the CB on in store purchases.
You place the order for in-store pickup (Site to Store) and you can get 5% through shopdiscover that way. Has always worked for me, same at best buy for that matter
