I haven't received a CL from them or BofA.  I'm opted out, but did notice a soft from them on Ex.  My initial thought was maybe it was someone trying to open a deposit account with m information that required an ID check.

My bad, I apologize. I replied to a different thread here, and wasted 15 minutes trying to make the strike-through function work.

I would definitely call Ally and ask them why they're softing you. If you didn't have an account with GMAC or any of the banks that they've absorbed, I don't see how they can soft you when you're opted out.

How can I find a list of the banks they've absorbed? I've tried Googling it and couldnt' find anything.

OK, that's worth a call.

Is your CL over $5K?

Back when all this Siggy/ World stuff started, 3 years or so ago, and none reported limits, and they just up and did it, there was huge speculation as to why banks would suddenly upgrade cards without running it by the cardholders.

It appears that the banks make more off of a Siggy/World swipe than from a standard card.

Maybe BofA, in its endless shaking of the money tree, has decided to automatically upgrade all the accounts of consumers that it semi-trusts, in hopes of generating higher transaction fees??

I don't quite understand how this relates to Ally softing a CR.

The only thing I can imagine is that I had signed up to be notified of some Amex promos.  Perhaps, this could have inadvertently lifted me from the opt out with Ex?

Re: ALLY is creeping me out!

See if anything looks familiar here: Ally Financial wiki

They seem to have absorbed some mortgage lenders, and considering how our mortgages have been shopped around, maybe something happened there??

But I would definitely call. Do expect that the first person who answers will talk to you in that soothing tone of voice that we all love. Tell this person that you do understand what you're talking about, and ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary.

How much more?  I am opted out and have all 3 CRAs frozen. At first all was quiet but, the more time goes by, the more activity I'm seeing.  Whereas, I had not received any kind of promotional mail from any bank in over 20 years, now -- the "You Are Pre-approved" mail is rolling in every other week, collection agencies are softing my CRs more than ever, I even had one put a hard inquiry on Transunion (thank God the BBB took care of getting that deleted) but, the point is, I am finding that opting out and paying the $10 to freeze each CRA has not worked for me.  My husband is not being "attacked" like I am so, I see that this is yet another case of mileage varying. Nonetheless, I am not pleased and, I don't know if there is anything that can be done about any of this.

Per this, the opt-out is only good for five years, unless you went for the permanent version.

Here's some discussion from the FTC.

Re: ALLY is creeping me out!

I read that Wiki article before. It doesn't list the banks they've taken over. You'd think something like that would be public knowledge, yet Google searches aren't bringing up anything.

My original understanding was that Ally was simply GMAC rebranded. Someone mentioned that they had taken over some banks, and I repeated that without checking. Should have known better.

It does appear that they took over one or more mortgage lenders. But it doesn't look like they gobbled up a bunch of banks, the way that BofA and Chase did.

Yes, this might be it.

I've always meant to, but never got around to "opting out" from the privacy disclosures I've received from the many recent apps and new accounts.
