AMEX 3X CLI POSSIBLE with old unpaid balance

I had an Amex over 15 yrs ago that was closed by Amex with a $1k balance. I recently got back in with the Amex family and I was wondering if I should apply for the 3X CLI at 61 days. I am not sure if I should since I do not need it. My util is about 13% and my credit line on Delta and SPG are $10K each. Any suggestions?

The worse they can say is no. If you don't need it and choose to request it anyway-that's up to you. If denied, they may indicate a past due obligation.

If you don't need it, why not pass? I would be very satisfied with 2 10k limits. I'd rather leave room for other cards to grow in limit over maxing out with Amex.

Just out of curiosity, did you end up paying off the $1k you owed Amex prior to getting back in with them?

If their internal DB records indicate your previous/unpaid obligation, then the 3x CLI may not happen.  You can always try, but as Lexie mentioned above, worse they can say is no.

Thanks to this post, I tried again with Amex (had an unpaid CO from 2002) and was approved for the BCE with a cl of $14900. I would love to get my card backdated, but not sure if they will or not. Do you recall if your account was able to be backdated as well?
