AMEX 3x CLI - Heads up!

Re: AMEX 3x CLI - Heads up!

What does an intermediate app for a different card do?

Say amex 1 CLI on January 1st
App new amex April 1

So CLI on in July? Or does the new app restart the wait, so October?

You can ask for CLI 180 days after your last approval. Got the 3x CLI on my BCP on 9/20. Then on 10/20 got my new OBC. On 3/20 got the 3x on the OBC.

I got my ED two weeks ago and immediately applied for 3x CLI. I was denied. The letter came and said it was because my score was too low... the problem is, they cited a soft credit pull that was done 4 days before I applied for the card, which happened to be 4 days before I was a cardmember again. I repeat, the pull was done when I had zero accounts with Amex. There was a 60 point discrepancy.

It's known that the SP for a CLI may not be current as of the date of the CLI request.  Be careful with your research.

The 3x CLI Guide states:

The CLI approval or denial will be based on the last soft pull before the CLI request and other factors like income/rent etc. A new hard pull or soft pull is not initiated when requesting the 3X CLI. If in doubt, get a copy of your Experian report and see when Amex issued a soft pull to gauge account statistics at that snapshot and request CLI accordingly.

Granted, 60 days seems to be out the window but this is also from the 3x CLI Guide:

Amex does NOT increase an account's credit limit during the first 60 days after it has been OPENED, or for at least 6 months from the last credit limit increase.

That hardly qualifies as covering OP's situation. Most would presume the latest HP would be used since they only just apped. I count this report as new news:

AMEX can / may SP your credit file before you become an AMEX cardholder. This also accounts for the chances of getting an instaproval, a marketing piece from AMEX, and in this case, a surprise use of an older credit report the cardholder may not have expected.

It's being worked on.  The whole 60 days thing is no longer valid.  If your credit file supports it then you can get a 3X CLI upon activation.  If not, you need to wait until it improves.  That could be 30 days, it could be 60 or it could be 150 days.

I would suggest that the language about the HP be separated from the SP:

The HP is used only to document the credit app. In the case of an existing cardholder, if a new card is issued, a new HP is documented.

The SP is used for the CLi. Full stop. (Additional speculation: The SP is the primary basis even for the initial app approval, certainly for subsequent card consideration) If the SP has been stable for 60+ days (say 90 to be conservative) prior to the first card app, then the cardholder is probably justified in requesting a CLI on getting the first card. If there have been major score improvements in the last 90 days, the new AMEX cardholder is advised to wait 60 days for a new SP to be generated.

Once the CLI is requested, then: If denied, a 90 day wait to try again. If CLI is granted, then 6 months wait on this and all AMEX cards the cardholder has, before any other CLI request.

I'm not sure why you assume that they denied him because of an earlier SP and not from the HP they received at application.  In looking at the OPs scores, they are borderline good enough for an AMEX approval.  It's not surprising that while they approved him for the card that they don't want to give him 3X that limit without an improvement in his scores and/or use and payment for the new card.

Re: AMEX 3x CLI - Heads up!

Irish,

As I tried to clearly say in my letter, I applied for the card on March 11th, and they cited my credit score on March 7th.

Im sure you're right, and even with my scores I didn't expect an approval, but they explicitly dated my credit score from four days before my approval as the reason for the denial.
