I just got off the phone with an AMEX rep. The answer is:
-Dillard's, Bloomingdales, Macy's,... are B&M department stores so purchases made in store or online are qualified for department stores cash back category.
-Even they coded Amazon.com as a department store. Amazon.com is an online distributor. They don't have B&M stores so purchases made on Amazon.com and its Market place are not qualified for department stores cash back category.
Thanks for the distinction tengteng!
Two questions. What is B&M? And I wonder what AMEX would've considered a Macy's product purchased on Amazon but shipped and sold by Macys? Macy's no longer sells via Amazon though so I guess we'll never know.

Brick and mortar stores.

No, because your payment was processed through Amazon.
