AMEX Starwood Question

I am very interested in the American Express Starwood card but have a quick question.

The offer right now for signing up (and the first purchase) is 10,000 points … that doesn’t seem like a lot.  Have they ever offered more?  I would rather wait for a better sign-up offer if they make them periodically.

Anticipating that someone might mention the great signup bonus of 40,000 points from Chase Sapphire Preferred, you should know I already have it (and love it).

Thoughts?

AMEX Platinum - NPSL (Approved for $75,000.00)

Chase Sapphire Preferred ($22,500.00)
Bank of America Cash Rewards ($5,000.00) - Sock Drawer
Discover ($4,500.00) - Sock Drawer
Capital One Venture ($7,500) - Sock Drawer

Re: AMEX Starwood Question

There has been a 30k points bonus in the past, but not on first purchase.  All of the SPG bonuses have been split between a first purchase and a spend.  Last time the 30k was around was in August - 10k first purchase and 20k after $5k in 6 months.

Re: AMEX Starwood Question

Have you noticed if this is an annual offer - that is, do they make this special offer once a year, every year?

If so, I can wait until August for the additional 20,000 points ....

Thanks!

Re: AMEX Starwood Question

It has been offered in the 4th quarter the prior two years, but one never knows.  SPG offers are never after a first spend, but always in two parts, as the prior poster has mentioned.

Sometimes, the tail end promo has a lower spending than $5k in 6 months.  I've seen it as low as $1,500 in 3 months for a 20K bonus.  If you don't need it immediately, I'd wait until August.  If nothing else, the current offer will always be available.

Re: AMEX Starwood Question

Currently you can get 25K points. I'm guessing you're seeing the 10K offer on Amex's site. It sucks that they always advertise a crappy offer directly on their site. Go to SPG.com and you will see the offer for 10K/ 15K, with the 15K after you meet min spend requirement. Of course you may want to wait for the extra 5K which should come around later in the year.

Starting Score: ~500 (12/01/2008)
Current Score: EQ 681 (04/05/13); TU 98 728 (01/06/12), TU 08? 760 (provided by Barclay 1/2/14), TU 04 728 (lender pull 01/12/12); EX 742 (lender pull 01/12/12)
