Amex backdating question

I started credit from scratch in May 2012 with a Wells Fargo secured card.
In November 2012 I got approved for an amex charge card.
If I apply in January for a revolver card will it backdate all the way to January 2012? That's how it's supposed to be but technically in January 2012 I had still no credit. That's like I make my history 5 months longer since my first card.

Will this happen or will it backdate to the same date as my first card ?

Re: Amex backdating question

You are correct.  If you app in January, you will get open date of 1/2012.

Basically, AMEX reports open date as the month card is opened in and your member year.

Hence, January is unofficially OPEN NEW AMEX month.

My luck, I keep opening them up in Dec.  Platinum before I knew any better.  Centurion as it was when they invited and accepted.

Op,

Correct. The beauty of backdating

Sorry, that's incorrect. Amex uses the year of your MSD and the current month of your new app

Re: Amex backdating question

I didn't get the thing about January is unofficially open new month. What does that mean?

What you mean opening in December ?

Re: Amex backdating question

For all Amex card members, they want to maximize their backdating by apping in Jan for subsequent cc's.

Open new Amex in January for maximum backdating.  Hence people in the know open their AMEXs in January (hence the term unofficial open an AMEX month).

As for the December thing, that was just me bitching that I keep opening AMEXs in December even though I am now in the know.
