Amex coding for supermarkets

My VISA credit cards show the category (the bank just translates the MCC) and most Walmarts near me get categorized as groceries.

However, with the new BCP I just got approved for, I now have to find out what category Amex assigns to these stores (http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/MCC-Codes-and-Grocery-Restaurant-cashback/td-p/1473256)

Is there an easy way (besides going into each store, doing a transaction and waiting to see what category the purchase shows up as) to find out the code for a store from Amex's viewpoint?

The most confusing part seemed to be that the online transaction history for the Amex card could show a category different from what would finally be decided in the statement? (http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/AMEX-BCE-Supermarket-Definition/m-p/1204689#M337299)

PS: I don't know where you live, but Meijer has been computed as a "grocery store" for my BCP. Fortunate, because I would assume it was a superstore otherwise.

+1 I haven't had any problems with Amex miscategorizing stores - the above chart is pretty self-explanatory.

FYI, Amex considers Walmart Neighboordhood Market a supermarket.

Re: Amex coding for supermarkets

I definitely had to do my due diligence before applying for the BCP. With that being said, my mom shops at the neighborhood Walmart and gets 6% back. Furthermore, she also shops at smaller Indian grocerie stores where she gets her meat, seasoning, certain veggies and they register for 6% back as well.

Current Cards:
AMEX Blue Cash Preferred (5/2013): CL - $9,900
Chase Freedom (7/2013): CL - $8,700
Chase Freedom (8/2012): CL - $7,000
Chase Freedom Unlimited (7/2007): CL - $3,300
US Bank Cash+ (04/2015): CL - $5,000
Chase Sapphire Reserved (01/2017): CL - $14,000

Same here. I use my card at a Mexican grocery store and it too counts as the 6%. Heck, I even used it the other day at Smart and Final and I expected that to be categorized as a wholesale warehouse but nah, I checked and AMEX listed it under grocery store. Sweet!
