...when I logged on to my account they has the "Apply now for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card" advert above my account.

Which remineded me I no longer stay in their hotels

Which reminded me that I used to stay in their hotels

Which reminded me I had a Preferred Guest account with them with points in it

Which caused me to go and check out the account

Which pointed out that I could swap the points for Airline miles

Which I did.

I've been wondering about this. I've never actually heard of a Starwoods hotel. Is it like a company that owns other hotels like how Choice operates Sleep Inn, Comfort Inn, etc?
