A singular use of Amex on PayPal probably won't get your account shutdown.  people use their cards on PP all the time.  However, the OP didn't purchase anything on PP, he sent himself money.  This is a big no no for any creditor but Amex especially because they pay particular attnetion to it.  I wouldn't send $6000 to myself on PP using Chase, Citi, Barclays.  Maybe you can get away with it with CapOne because they don't seem to care much about anything.  Burn em today, get a $30K limit tomorrow.

If you're buying a furry thingamajob on Ebay and use PP for $45.69 and use your Amex card, Amex isn't going to care.

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Re: Amex reinstatement?

Just got off the phone with account specialist.

She said there were some "VERY VERY VERY suspect charges" that had been identified by the system and as result shut down all my cards per the policy. She quoted the Paypal charges on my business card and HHonors card.

She said since the charges were so high and non descriptive they coudlnt tell if I was sending money to myself or not as thats not allowed per their terms. She said no reinstatement if I cant prove otherwise, I cant so thats that.

Told her, it is what it is im just thankful I cashed out my MR points. Also asked about the AF refund on my gold card for $175.

She transfered me to CS who initally didnt know what to do. They came back and said a supervisor put a $175 credit on my account and a statement would cut with a negative balance. At such time I could call in and they would send me a check for the negative balance.

Considering they gave me $100 worth of credits for my annual fee when I complained a few weeks ago I think I made out OK! Smiley LOL

Re: Amex reinstatement?

Sorry to hear about this OP.. Least your are taking this gracefully.

You pretty much did everything you could do wrong to set off every red flag Amex has using PayPal and sending money to your self, etc. to meet spend, etc..  I am guessing your friends account most likely will be shut down to due to him sending money to you by paypal..  Although who knows.  So essentially you MS'ed 6k spent by paypal which caused this self inflicted AA.  Good lesson for other of what not to do.

Thanks for the informative post, although most should know better.  I do appreciate your honesty though!

I'm glad to hear they did the right thing with your AF... I was hoping at least that much would work out for you.  Smiley Wink

Looks like AmEx may keep you out for some time to come.

As tragic as this is for the OP, I agree that it is very informative to those who otherwise might not be aware that Amex is on the lookout for stuff like this.

Further, even though it was self-inflicted, I appreciate the OP's honesty with us on what the underlying factor was.  We could have been left merely speculating, instead we got reminded that PayPal is, indeed still better off left to other cards.

I buy my vitamins and herbal supplements on eBay and use PayPal, but I always use any card but Amex... actually, I don't even have Amex loaded on my PayPal account.

Those types of transactions, (actual merchandise purchases), are just fine. Zillions of eBay users have their Amex card associated with PayPal because Amex has a reputation as offering better protections.

I agree, 'normal' transactions won't make them bat an eye... but in my own case if a single missed keystroke could even come close to causing me a problem it's just not worth it. (I have used the wrong Visa by 'accident' due to keystroke errors, "fat-fingering" I call it.)

I should have been more specific that I refrain from all Amex/PayPal usage out of an abundance of caution, but it's certainly not required (or right) for everybody.  Smiley Happy

+1

I've had my Amex green since 1999 & it has always been linked/used on my PayPal account because I order online a LOT....not one peep from them in 17 years ! Then again, I never have sent funds.
