Regarding your question, I had never heard of that.

Just two remarks concerning your example:

1. USAA is not a credit union but a federal savings bank.

2. Even if it were a credit union, I don't know what being non-military would have to do with being not a member of the CU.

I believe most credit unions require you to become a member upon approval of any their products; auto loan, credit card, etc... When I was approved for a credit card with GTE FCU, they required me to open an account with them before the card could be ordered.

USAA only recently started offering products to non-military associated personnel.  previously, only military-related personnel & their families were eligible for their products.

I'm aware of that. Nevertheless, I don't think that being a member of the military and being a member of a CU is the same thing Smiley Very Happy.

A Credit Union, by definition, only offers services to it's members.  A "union" of any kind conducts business and provides services to the interests and benefit of its members.  In fact, in order for a Credit Union to be chartered, it must declare it's "Field of Membership" which becomes essentially the main component of it's mission.  They are legally prohibited from conducting business outside of the "qualifying field of membership."

Therefore, to answer your question:  No.  Not if it is a credit union.

Federal Savings banks, such as USAA, may opt to do so because they are not formed as a credit "union."
