Is it suggested or required to apply for an amex charge card prior to trying for one of their credit cards? If I app for a credit card first, would it be possible to use the same HP to app for a charge card?

If done in a short period of time, it doesn't matter (assuming you get lucky on the Amex one pull when done one right after the other) which comes first; generally speaking if you want both the charge card and the credit card though, it's recommended to apply for the charge card first as it has a lower underwriting criteria.
If you are denied for your first application for whatever reason, there's an Amex imposed 31-day waiting period where any future application will automatically be denied without even being considered.
Depending on what your score and credit report happen to be, should be the arbiter as to whether you need to apply for the charge card first or whether you can do the reverse. Put another way, if you're near gold-plated anyway, it doesn't matter as to the order.

It is very possible to be approved for the credit card without having a charge card first - I accomplished this goal last month.
As for what we would recommend for your specific credit profile, we would need more information to determine that. Would you like us to provide recommendations on your order, or was the general info provided sufficient?

My first Amex was the Zync NPSL; before that I never had a charge card.

I got the revolver without having a charge card. As others have mentioned if you think you are borderline. Go with the "easiest" first.

You can get a credit card without having charge card first. I apped for an SPG and was instantly approved with no prior account with AMEX.
