Applying for the first credit card

Hello! I'm new to the fourm!

I want to apply for my first credit card.

I have been getting invitations from Chase (Chase Freedom & Unlimited).

But since I have no credit history, I think it's unlikely that I will get approved.

Should I still go ahead and apply for the Chase Freedom card?

If I get denied, would it affect my credit score or history?

Should I apply for Discover card instead?

It's not that I would get approved for Discover card,

but I heard they are little more lenient on having no credit history.

Should I apply for two cards at the same time?

Would that be a bad idea?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum J10.

I will start by asking you some questions that everyone else will ask you before they can give you any adivse. Most importantly what are your fico scores if you know (Not the Credit Karma as they are not real Fico scores), do you have any baddies on your reports, your ballpark annual income (if you don't mind sharing), any accounts reporting in your reports, any Authorized User account, and finally is there any specific card type or lender you are looking at? Where do you spend most of the money, such as dining, entertainment, travel? If you can answer these questions, you will definintely get some solid advise here.

Re: Applying for the first credit card

Since this is your first credit card, I assume you have no credit history. So best to get a secured card first. CapOne or Discover secured are good starting points. You can easily get most credit cards after 6-12 months of credit card payment history given you have decent income. Don't go crazy on application sprees. Pay in full at the end of the month and take care to keep reported utilization at less than 20% of the limit.

Re: Applying for the first credit card

Are we talking under 21...young student age with no history or a bit older.....

Not being a jack as but there are cards geared for 'student' types where the 'no history' thing is expected

Ex: Discover has a student card....as does Cap-1 and although in most cases 'anyone' can apply these cards are fishing for

new untapped blood

Cap-1 Journey, i think

Citi has a thank you-college student card

Wells **bleep**o does as well

So again a 40 y.o with no history is a bit different than a 19 y.o.....if closer to middle age than middle school go straight to the secured, if not lots of places don't mind being the 1st for a kid.
