I'm not saying it is, but after all the Amex horror stories I read here, anything that even remotely sounds like a negative thing from a CCC sounds like a threat to me
Discover's CS was really friendly when I called them to verify info when I got my card approved, and also when I activated my card. But I haven't had to deal with them beyond that.
So I'm guessing it was just their way of telling you to contact them about a lower APR rate before you make a major purchase - they probably have an easier time approving that than retroactively giving a lower rate on an existing balance.
The only way lenders would consider adjusting your interest on an existing balance is if you enter a hardship program...which you probably want to avoid unless you really need it! The other posters are right that a BT would be a great bet.
Meanwhile, call Discover and ask to speak to a APR specialist - they can adjust your APR on the spot. When I called last spring, they lowered my standard APR and gave me an awesome promo for 6 months Again, it won't help your current balance, but new purchases will be included - you'll see your balance shrink dramatically as more of your payment goes to existing balance rather than new interest.
