They don't actually, but I was just trying trying to make a light jest. I'm assuming they placed in the button, the last thing on the designer's mind was cardmembers testing it on a card with a hard limit.
Yes, it is painless (providing you don't mind giving Amex your tax return transcripts).
And you can even be stupid! I applied, got the request for my 4506T and sent it in. For reasons I can't quite reconstruct, a few days later I went back on the site to see if there was some indication of progress, and ended up applying for the same CL. In the mail I got another 4506T (with a new reference number). At that stage I called in to make sure I wasn't messing up the process. I was assured that they would just ignore the second. And things worked out.
