Cheddar:  At Speedway there is a sign that states you may fill your car up to ONLY $75.  If you're driving a rv for example, it will allow you $75 worth of fuel.  You then have to re-swipe your card and continue to fuel.  The pump automatically shuts off at $75.

The sign states that is the policy of Visa, not Speedway.  It doesn't say anything about AMEX or Discover though.

Hmm...now that is interesting.  I've never seen one of those signs before.

Who sets the authorization limit when you pay-at-the-pump?  Is it set by the gas station or the Credit card?  Is the authorization the same for all credit cards?  VISA, MA, AMEX? or does the authorization vary?

GRRRR isint Amex anoying you have to type in youre ZIP code. They always ask for Zip at wallgreens also!!!! I donr mind in doors but when you're freezing in Chicago wather those extra seconds are an eternity tryaing to type in you're ZIP.

That's not just Amex.  Every CC does that at the pump.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

When I swipe at the pump using AMEX, the authorization is $75.  If I  swipe a visa/mc, the authorization is only $50.  same gas station.  The zip code is up to the individual station.  I think it's a theft prevention technique.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

In our area, some request the zip code and some don't. So I assume from this that it's up to the gas station, or franchise, or brand, etc.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

Here in California, SoCal at least, I think all gas stations ask for zip code. And I don't think I've ever seen a sign limiting the dollar amount of gas one can put in.

Here in Texas, all Chevron & Texaco stations require the zip. Most convenience store pumps don't require it.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

Chevron and Texaco are the same company. I normally don't use either one of them. I normally use Valero,Mobil or Murphy Oil(WalMart). None of those three in my area require a zip code.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

I'm in CT and I usually use my own bank card but pretty sure some signs say 75 and call if you are going to charge more.I do not use exxon mobil or citgo.

Re: Authorization at gas pump

I hae it when gas goes over $3 a gallon because the $75 will only ALMOST fill my tank-

I have gotten so used to paying $75 a shot and entering my zipcode I don't even think about it much anymore-
