There isn't really an average per se, because its based on people's credit reports. What I would say is this: in comparison to Chase I have found that Amex gives me about 1/3 of the initial credit line that chase will give me on an instant approval. Of course after 61 days the cards pull even with credit line.
That's the opposite experience I had. I got approved for a BCE and a Chase Freedom within minutes of each other. The BCE has a $10k limit while Chase only gave me $3.5k.

For a reference point the chase card I got was 17k on a CSP and 5.7k on Amex BCP. I had no prior history with amex at time of app. I would note seven months earlier I got a freedom and the initial credit limit was 3k.
Amex BCP: 2500 went to $7500 61day 3x, auto cli to 10k, auto cli to 12.6k, online cli request to 16k
CSP: 5000 Recon to 7500, auto cli to 10k, online cli soft pull $11k

@FICO_Fighter wrote:My BCP started out at $2500 3/2013 when I had a 710 score, just the other day it went up to $16k. My CSP that I apped the same day for started out at $5k and its at $11k as of 2 months ago in June.
My short experience with AMEX (1 Month so far) has been that they were extremely generous with a starting CL of $8,000 for me only having 6 months of prior credit history.
I was approved for the BCE in the past week with a 1k credit limit, was at the end of a mini-spree so not really sure what all was reporting at the time. Based on my income/credit score being somewhere in the low 700s I think it was a pretty fair starting point.
It really is YMMV.
Back in March, I was instantly approved for the BCE at $1500 and had a successful 61 day 3X CLI to $4500. On the 6th, I was approved for the Costco TE at $3500. I'm likely going to request the next CLI (November 1st) on whichever card I consistently have more charges on
im guessing it has alot to do with income, as i report a lower income. i now have 4 accounts with amex but they have not granted me an increase since june 2011. neither my clear or hhonors has ever been granted an increase. they both still have their same starting limits. clear opened at 5k (march 2013) and still is. opened hhonors in july 2011 and still is at is starting limit of 5k. seems like i might get a higher starting limit if it weren't for the income i report to them.
