Bad Day with Amex...

Im a bit miffed about the misinformation from chat reps! Months ago I asked about consolidating cards. I even saved a copy of the chat to make sure I could refer back to it. The rep stated whatever card I was transferring limits to had to be at least 12 months old and the cards the limits were coming from had to be at least 60 days old. Gave me a date of November 13th, cool. Asked again today for clarity since November is coming up and this rep apologizes but tells me I was given the information backwards! Awesome. So here I am sitting around waiting on November to transfer the business limits to BCE and close those cards but now the business cards are the ones that have to be at least 12 months old. I'll be closing these in the next couple weeks I'm not waiting around for all that. Smiley Frustrated Geez what a cluster**** of nonsense. Once again I fail to see how Amex was ever #1 in customer service I still havent witnessed any examples of this since I opened my first card nearly a year ago.

Anywho thats it for my rant lol Still in a fairly good mood, almost Friday, life is pretty sweet.

Secondary Issue (not important just extra Amex data from today):

Attempted a 180 (really 182) increase on BCE, denied. Not particularly upset about it but I find the denial reasons a bit silly. Now if they werent comfortable extending me more credit or stated I barely use the limit I have now that I would have understood but those didnt make it to the denial list.

FICO Score: 733, which is about 60 points higher than when I was approved for the card Smiley LOL

Too many Inquiries in last 6 months: No more than 4 on EX in this timeframe

Amount of Loan Balances Too High: 6k in student loans, DEFERRED plus a Lease amount around 6.5k which is paid down monthly

Monthly payments too low in relation to debt: Umm I dont get it. My overall util is 6%. There is a $0 balance on ALL my Amex cards and the only cards with balances reporting at the moment are Discover & Slate. Both of which get payments well over the minimum each month.

Too many Inquiries in last 6 months: No more than 4 on EX in this timeframe I don't think 4 is a lot per say, but -most- people probably only have like 1-2 inquiries spread throughout all reports in a year so I guess 4 might seem like a lot; I think this is probably an excuse because Amex doesn't usually appear to be overally inquiry sensitive.

Amount of Loan Balances Too High: 6k in student loans, DEFERRED plus a Lease amount around 6.5k which is paid down monthly This seems to be sort of common with a lot of people who post here -- deferred or not, they tend to count student loan balances against you (funny since $6k in student loans is like nothing).

Monthly payments too low in relation to debt: Umm I dont get it. My overall util is 6%. There is a $0 balance on ALL my Amex cards and the only cards with balances reporting at the moment are Discover & Slate. Both of which get payments well over the minimum each month. My guess is they are counting your loan balances in this, not just your CCs/revolving debt; it's funny how FICO will knock you down for not having installment loans but when you do, you get knocked down for loan balances too high or payments too low in relation to debt. That and the might feel they've given you enough credit at this time (of course they should just say that!).

lol Thats why Im not really trippin off the increase. If I was looking at my account as an analyst and noticed $60 spent in the last 3 months Id have denied it too. So if one of the reasons was "look here lady you barely even use this card you clearly dont need an increase" then that would have been totally understandable. Hilariously unprofessional but understandable Smiley Tongue Increase isnt the issue here. That customer service misinformation though Smiley Mad Not loving it

LOL that would be so funny if someone at Amex actually said that. I would actually rather be told something like that straight out than have things be beaten around the bush/wrong information.

LOL Always business, never personal. Why are you guys so focused on the increase denial? I only threw that in there as extra information. I didnt need it and more amused by the decision than anything. Maybe I should have put that part last Smiley Tongue Editing now

Re: Bad Day with Amex...

Something similar happened to me recently.  I got approved for the Amex Delta Gold card at the beginning of August with a SL of $4600.  I tried for the immediate CLI upon activation, was denied, so I figured no biggie I'll wait the 91 days and ask again.

Not even two weeks later Delta emailed me a bonus offer for the Amex Delta Platinum that was too good to pass up.  I apped and was approved for a SL of $1400.  I often charge $800 at a time on hotels alone for work, so that wouldn't leave much wiggle room.  I called customer service to see if they could match or at least come closer to the CL on the Platinum to other cards I had recently been approved for:  $5k for Citi AA Plat, $4600 Amex Delta Gold, $4.9k for Discover, etc.  She said they couldn't increase the limit on the Platinum at this time, but instead she offered to reallocate an amount of my choosing from the Gold to the Platinum right away.  Having read around here their policies of having to wait x number of months, I asked "Can you really do that?"  She said yes, just give it 7 - 10 days to process.  Since my plan was to SD the Gold after meeting the spend bonus anway, I said sure let's move $3500 from Gold to Platinum.

Two weeks later nothing has happened so I asked about it on chat.  They said I have to call a certain 1-800 number to ask about that.  I called but hung up after about 15 minutes with no answer and just called the number on the back of the card.  I got in touch with a rep fairly quickly but he said he needed to transfer me to a specialist.  Well, after almost 30 minutes and three failed transfers later I finally get to speak to the specialist.  She proceeds to inform in no uncertain terms that she will not be approving my request for reallocation because their policy says I have to wait 13 months.  I told her I didn't request anything, an offer was made to me and I accepted it.  She didn't care.  I asked to speak to a supervisor, she claimed they were all unavaible but one would call me back right away at a number of my choosing.  Almost 24 hours later and of course I haven't heard a peep.

So I gotta agree with HeavenlyFlower here.  Customer service seemed great when they were offering the perfect solution to my problem.  Too bad it all turned out to be bullcrap and they gave me the runaround.  Would have been better getting a flat no, wait 60 or 90 days and ask for a CLI then.  Smiley Frustrated

Wow Smiley Surprised Wish I could say Im surprised but sadly Im not. Seems like the norm in my experience. Chat rep also gave me a specific number to call stating I could request a "limit transfer exception" when closing the accounts but I have zero faith in that happening. Like none. I'll give it a shot but kind of expecting to be told the same thing you were. Likely bullcrap!

Re: Bad Day with Amex...

Amex - and most other lenders - have a habit of just spouting out stuff when they just really don't want to give you a CLI and they aren't willing to give you a straight reason.

But that customer service is bleck lol Never will I understand how people claim Amex has *excellent customer service* I just dont see it.
