BofA Recon

Hey there,

I've had a checking/savings account with BofA since I was 18. When I first started applying for credit cards I applied for one with them and was rejected due to my lack of credit history.

I understood and was able to snag a card from Capital One. Slowly but surely I was able to see my score go up and was approved for an auto loan through a credit union. I've never missed a payment on anything! The other day I decided to see if I was prequalified for an Amex cards and I was! I was given a 5,500 CL. To me, that was awesome!

That same day, I decided to apply for an Alaska Airlines Card (since I travel frequently) and was approved, but not for the Signature. I was approved for the Platinum Plus with a $2500 CL.

I called the recon department today and attempted to make a case. Let them know I've been working hard to establish my credit, have been with them since I could open an account and well, you know, tried to kill them with kindness. The rep was very polite and suggested I close out my first account, reapply, and allow her to take a look at my credit profile.

Reason being, you reap the Signature rewards only upon initial approval. You can't get it after you've been approved for a different "type." Again, she was very friendly and walked me through everything.

However, she wasn't able to change anything. She thanked me for my business and suggested I establish a credit relationship and attempt to apply later.

So now, I'm concerned about a couple of things: 1) should I be worried that the 1st account was closed and new account opened?

2) Should I just close out the account altogether considering the benefits are nowhere near as good as the signature?

and then 3)  should I call the recon line again or just keep things as they are?

Re: BofA Recon

Once your limit is $5,000, you can request an upgrade to the Visa Signature and get the benefits. I was able to recon my $1000 Cash Rewards approval last month to $19500 and it was upgraded a few days later.

Re: BofA Recon

I would call back. I don't buy what the Analyst told you about only getting Signature or Platinum based on the initial app. I think you got bad advice to re-apply.
