My favorite local coffee shop takes Discover but not Amex. Their rival does the opposite.

One advantage of Amex is that many places that DO take Amex, ONLY take Amex.

I have *never* run into a place that only took Discover. It's always the 3rd or 4th wheel to Visa/MC/maybe Amex.

Still, Visa definitely has the most extensive network these days. I wouldn't want to go through life without at least one Visa card.

Kinda weird that they're lending standards are so tight with limited acceptance compared to visa and mc, right?!? Lol the only place that ever denied my Barclay's Amex was a smoke shop ahhahahaha go figure!
Pretty sure many places don't accept Amex because of the higher merchant fee (like 5% instead of 3%) at least that's what my boss told me. Lol
Oh no, I'm gonna be the whiney customer tjat demands Amex accepance now!!! Hahhaa! Not! Lol I'm nice :-)
