CITI AAdvantage denied due to "restricted privilege"

[ Edited ]

I am getting to terms with the harsh realization that an excellent credit score is not enough. I have FICO scores of 795, 783 and 747. 9 total accounts, 3 current revolving accounts with only one showing a balance at 2% utilization, auto loan that I just paid off, and a handsome annual income.

I applied for Starwood. Reject, currently under reconsideration.

I applied for AAdvantage. Reject. They would only say that my account has "restricted privileges". Nothing more. I believe the reason has to do with a couple of returned checks   two years ago (due to not updating the autopay in time when I switched my bank account) resulting in a 60 day late that made CITI close the CCs that I had with them at that time. Otherwise my history is clean. But that late was two years ago.

I'm not thrilled at the way CITI has treated me and probably won't go back to them in future, but at the same time, I don't want to waste one hard inquiry that has already appeared on my report. I might as well get the AA card and the bonus.

It appears that I have been blacklisted by CITI. Has anyone else here had similar experience but managed to convince CITI to look at your current status and get approved?

Unfortunately Citi has a long memory and they do blacklist. I had a 10 yr old co acct they denied me because of it.

Amex runs telecheck.

For most applicants, if they see payday loans, nsf checks, or even honest mistake, they'll refuse to approve without some considerable effort and explaining.  In this case, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Does that mean they approved the AA credit card when you applied for the cobranded AAAdvantage?

@gettnthere Amex also pointed to my 60-day late that is 23 months old (not 2 years yet)

Not sure if I understood your q. No, CITI denied my current application. The CITI cards that I had in the past but now closed were not AA cobranded cards.

Re: CITI AAdvantage denied due to "restricted privilege"

I charged off a Citi card (possibly 2, can't remember) but now have 6 Citi cards if you count the gas card.  I waited years and years though.  Maybe 2 years is too recent in their eyes.

I called up a few CITI numbers. Their representatives were hard to talk to, and they don't seem to have anything to say about my specific situation. They just kep parroting what they have been asked to repeat when your application get denied. Dead end. Lesson: once you are in CITI's bad books, don't deal with them for a long long time.

Well, returned check is actually a very serious delinquency (more serious than late). I believe any lender woud have reacted strongly if you ever bounced a check before.

I see. I should have been more careful with the autopay. They kept trying to withdraw from an old account when I had transfered funds to the new one.
