Guess this is all part of YMMV craziness of credit! I had the same when Penfed opened a duplicate credit card for me (as part of a chip&pin conversion). Normal process is that the first card closes in a week or two. It's now been 19months and both are open, working and reporting.

I got my third US Bank card by going in to the branch and telling them I wanted to convert my Cash+ into the Travel Rewards. They opened the TR with $17k, paid the balance on the Cash+ at the teller station... and then I kept getting Cash+ Statements. That was in August I think.

I've since gotten multiple BT 0% APR 12-month offers for the Cash+ card, because it went to zero, in addition to regular usage of the TR card.
