Can a AU take over an account as primary?

For example, my Uncle is slimmimg my Grandmothers cards down and I want to jump on the last ones still standing so to speak. Can, as an AU for a while, I be moved to primary, with permission of course, to keep the card history? What happens to accounts if something happens to the account holder? That also is a question when a spouse is only an AU on cards and something happens to the main person in the marriage.

The short answer is generally no a AU can't become the primary on a card. Some banks (very few) have joint accounts but even those generally don't let you remove one of the people.

An AU has no legal responsibility for the debt on an account of another that is reporting as an AU to their credit file.

To assume legal responsibility with the creditor, the consumer must apply for credit and be approved by the creditor.

Thus, there is no conversion of an AU to a joint or sole account.

You must apply with the creditor to establish your own credit with them.

Re: Can a AU take over an account as primary?

I was able to assume liability from an ex-partner on a 8 year old Chase Ink (was an AU) when I took over my company, but it's a business account and probably different for personal. The only thing I inherited was the history, I still had to go through the approval process with my own SL and APR. The technical term was "Change of Liability".
