BoysMum, I too went over the cl many years ago(I've had 2 cards for over 8 years each). It resulted not only in the OL fee, putting me up to the default interest rate of 29.99%, but also Cap1 froze my future cl's for 5 full years!
One time when I was talking to an acct. specialist, she told me that going over the limit, or being late will kill your ability to get a cli for a lonnnnggggggg time. I believe her.
But sticking it out, paying on time, my cl which started out at $300 is now $3,200 with the permanent deletion of the AF and the monthly fee.

BoysMum, get into a better product? No. I don't think it will kill your chances if you apply for another card....unless of course your scores are low or if you have some baddies.
Yes, please do call the back door number to the account specialists. They are very friendly, and you can actually carry on a conversation with them about your accounts, and cards in general. And if you ask them a question and they don't know the answer, ask them to transfer you to their supervisor, who prolly has the answers. That's what I do!
