Cap 1 is refusing to combine two cards...what's up with that?

I am trying to get a higher limit card so I can fire First Premier and app'd and got a 2nd cap 1 card w/ $500 limit.  Not great but whatever, I already have a cap 1 with a $300 limit.  I called 800-625-7866 to try to combine the two and the rep checked the existing account first and put me on hold and came back with "at this time we are not allowing two cap 1 accounts to be combined.  Okay so where did I go wrong here?  Should I have activated the 2nd card first?  called and given the new account number first?  Called a different number.  And no, there's no lateness or outstanding bal on Cap1.  Suggestions?  Options?

it seems like a lot of the companies that use to combine, no longer do this.

If the 2 Cap1 cards have differenct APR's, it becomes legally messy, especially in the first year of the card,

Suggest you fire First Premiere anyway, and work with the 2 Cap1 for now.

Looks like that's what I may be doing anyway.  I've just called the number to activate the new Cap1 and the activation CSR said I could combine and transferred me and the service rep (or whatever they are called) said I couldn't but that the new card has 0% apr first year and will got to $750 by Mar 2011 if I use it and pay on time.  sigh - is that credit steps or something?  Both cards are mastercard platinum.

0% for a year is a very good deal.

Yep, I'll be looking to do a BT to pay down a card.  I've only got two with balances that I'd already planned to pif this month, so BT will do just nicely.  Think I'm gonna stick First Premier in a drawer for a few months before firing them.  It is one of my oldest cards since I started rebuilding.
